Propagating Phase Boundaries: Formulation of the Problem and Existence via Glimm Method

چکیده
Abstract. In this paper we consider the hyperbolic-elliptic system of two conservation laws that describes the dynamics of an elastic material governed by a non-monotone strain-stress function. Following Abeyaratne and Knowles, we propose a notion of admissible weak solution for this system in the class of functions with bounded variation. The formulation includes an entropy inequality, a kinetic relation (imposed along any subsonic phase boundary), and an nucleation criterion (for the appearance of new phase boundaries). We prove the L–continuous dependence of the solution to the Riemann problem. Our main result yields the existence and the stability of propagating phase boundaries. The proof is based on Glimm’s scheme and in particular on techniques going back to Glimm-Lax. In order to deal with the kinetic relation, we prove a result of pointwise convergence for the phase boundary.

متن کاملSolving Path Following Problem for Car-Like Robot in the Presence of Sliding Effect via LMI Formulation
One of the main problems of car-like robot is robust path following in the presence of sliding effect. To tackle this problem, a robust mix H2/H∞ static state feedback control method is selected. This method is the well-known linear robust controller which is robust against external disturbance as well as model uncertainty. In this paper, the path following problem is formulated as linear matri...

This paper is devoted to the spectral theory (more precisely, tothe variational theory of the spectrum) of guided waves in anelastic half cylinder. We use variational methods to investigateseveral aspects of propagating waves, including localization (seeFigure 1), existence criteria and the formulas to find them. Weapproach the problem using two complementary methods: Thevariational methods fo...

We present a numerical method for computing elasto-plastic ows in metals. The method uses a conservative Eulerian formulation of elasto-plasticity together with a higher-order Godunov nite diierence method combined with tracking of material boundaries. The Eulerian approach avoids the problem of mesh distortion caused by a Lagrangian remap, and can be easily extended to the computation of ows i...
متن کاملThe Glimm Scheme for Perfect Fluids on Plane–Symmetric Gowdy Spacetimes
We propose a new, augmented formulation of the coupled Euler-Einstein equations for perfect fluids on plane-symmetric Gowdy spacetimes. The unknowns of the augmented system are the density and velocity of the fluid and the firstand second-order spacetime derivatives of the metric. We solve the Riemann problem for the augmented system, allowing propagating discontinuities in both the fluid varia...
